Continuing Music Therapy Education Information

www.musictherapyworks.com offers synchronous (live presentations) and asynchronous (recorded presentations) on topics relevant to music therapists. The course information is available for music therapists after payment is received. Participants have 90 days from time of the symposium. Successful completion of the course includes the completion of the course evaluation.

Ongoing Course Event: More Than Music Analysis: Working with Adolescents with I/DD Diagnoses

When:  January 24, 2026 – 10am-1pm Central Standard Time

What: More Than Lyric Analysis: Working with Adolescents with I/DD Diagnoses – This symposium addresses many of the issues that clinical music therapists face when working with adolescents who have intellectual/developmental diagnoses including the ethical questions about censorship and age appropriate interventions. The symposium will offer opportunities to discuss the challenges and joys of working with students and clients who are often neglected in music therapy coursework and research while providing networking events for the therapists who serve such clients.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Presentation #1 – Participants will identify three considerations when developing therapeutic music experiences for adolescents whose development does not match their chronological age. (CBMT Board Certification Domains: 12; 13; 14; 18; 19; 23; 27; 30; 32; 33; 35; 57; 65)
  2. Presentation #2 – Participants will write a response to a question of censorship in music therapy treatment based on the 2019 American Music Therapy Association Code of Ethics Principles for Ethical Practice. This response will be submitted as part of the course evaluation. (CBMT Board Certification Domains: 2; 3;14; 15; 18; 19; 28; 29; 30; 34; 35; 38; 43; 50; 51; 57)
  3. Presentation #3 – Participants will engage in developing therapeutic music experiences for use with their client population to implement in music therapy sessions. Demonstration of the therapeutic music experiences will be included in the course evaluation. (CBMT Board Certification Domains: 29; 31; 37; 38;51; 54)

Prerequisites:

This symposium is designed for board certified music therapists but is open to all interested parties. A current CBMT number is required for all therapists seeking credit from the Certification Board for Music Therapists.

Participants who do not have the board certification status will receive a certificate of attendance without the granting of credits at the completion of the course evaluation.

Presenters – 

Mary Jane Landaker, MME, MT-BC (Master of Music Education, Music Therapist- Board Certified) is the owner of www.musictherapyworks.com, offering products and webinars for music therapists. She is involved with the Online Conference for Music Therapists and serves as a full-time music therapist for persons with developmental and psychiatric concerns.
