Songwriting for Music Therapists – demonstration element: completion of three (3) songs – may present via video or copies of sheet music. Instructor will respect all copyright privileges of the author. 
Required materials: ability to send copies of songs to instructor (e.g., camera, webcam, music composition software, pdf transfer, etc.

Module Learning Objectives:
Participant will identify basic areas of focus in terms of music theory
Participant will review elements of music theory to inform songwriting skill development
Participant will complete three (3) songs demonstrating basic songwriting skill with indications of how song could be used in therapy


Schedule (all schedules are presented using number of minutes elapsed within the course):
00:00-00:05 – Introduction to the Course
00:05-00:10 – Self-evaluation of music theory knowledge
00:10-00:45 – Composition exercises: dice game; set notes; chord progressions; picture-based songwriting (participants will be expected to pause the video at several times to complete basic exercises – the lecture lasts approximately 20 minutes of this time with the remaining time to be spent in task completion)
00:45-00:50 – Instructions on how to submit demonstration element

One Client, One Instrument – demonstration element: Completion of brainstorming sheet/file submitted to instructor

Participant will review elements of music theory to inform songwriting skill development
Participant will complete brainstorming sheet/file demonstrating understanding of function of instruments within specific therapeutic environment/relationship

00:05-00:10 – Lecture about multiple function of all materials
00:10-00:45 – Guided brainstorming exercise (participants will be expected to pause the video at several times to complete basic exercises – the lecture lasts approximately 20 minutes of this time with the remaining time to be spent in task completion)
00:45-00:50 – Instructions on how to submit demonstration element

Participant will develop personal strategy for maximizing space within specific therapy conditions
Participant will complete brainstorming sheet/file demonstrating understanding of topic within specific therapeutic environment/relationship
